“LEADING A CHURCH IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT JOBS IN AMERICA!” … Peter Drucker.

According to leadership guru Peter Drucker (the Father of Modern Management), leading a church, especially a large congregation, is one of the three most difficult jobs in America. The other two are university president and hospital administrator.

The university president has to “lead” all those highly intelligent, tenured professors, as well as oversee a multimillion dollar campus, keep the alumni and contributors happy, and make sure the football team wins. Most importantly, he or she must ensure that the students get a quality education.

The hospital administrator has to manage units of highly competent, fiercely independent physicians, while dealing with attorneys and insurance companies, not to mention the patients who complain about the food.

For the pastor, it’s a spicy blend of preaching and pastoral work. Meetings with the deacons, elders or trustees. Hundreds, maybe thousands of people, many of whom are short-tempered, consumer-driven Americans. And if the church is large enough, paid staff whose immediate circle of friends takes sides with the staff person when there are disputes.

Needless to say the complexities are great and the demands can be overwhelming. So all you lead pastors out there … TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELVES. Take time off (including a Sabbath and vacation time), get plenty of rest, exercise, develop meaningful friends inside and outside the church and date your wife! Above all, guard your heart and depend on the Lord for your joy and strength. You must be intentional about it. Nobody else but you can make it happen! As my mentor once taught me, “When you burn the candle at both ends you’re not as bright as you think you are!” And that’s all I have to say about that! - Dp

WEDDING PASTOR DAVE

Quote from a church planter regarding Dave Page:

“Having planted 3 churches, Dave knows firsthand the ever changing challenges of starting a new church. He’s a guide who knows the trail very well. The thing that sets Dave apart from other coaches is the level of his investment in the planter.” Nathan Oates, Emmaus Church Community

Carrie and I had the privilege of attending Anthem Church’s One-Year Anniversary service on 10-10-10 at the Boys & Girls Club in Thousand Oaks, CA.

It was a high energy service that saw 276 people attend in two services. Anthem celebrated by giving their entire offering for the day away. They called it “Celebration Generosity.” A cool and gusty thing to do for a new church or any church for that matter! The offering will go to two teams, The Thirst Project in Swaziland and Anthem’s Camarillo Church Launch. The offering total for 10-10-10 was $24,000!

Anthem Church is a new church plant in the EFCA West located in Thousand Oaks, CA. Matt Larson is the lead pastor. Matt is the son of Steve Larson, pastor of EV Free Conejo in Newbury Park, CA and Matt’s uncle is Jim Larson, pastor of EV Free Camarillo.

Anthem Church has seen many people come to Christ in this last year, many baptized, and many leaders developed. Now, the church is doing something VERY UNIQUE - they are planting another church with Kevin Bailey (church planter) within a year and a half of the start of Anthem! This is unprecedented in the EFCA but I believe it will become a model for future EFCA church plants! Some may think it’s impossible for a new church to plant another church in that short of time but as Jesus said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible!” (Matthew 19:26).

I compare this to Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile on May 6, 1954. Nobody had ever run a sub 4 minute mile. Most believed it was impossible. Some even thought a runner’s heart would burst if they tried. Banister believed he could do it and he was successful. As a result, many others followed suit in the next few months running sub 4 minute miles. I believe this is what we are going to see in the EFCA! I believe we will see many of our EFCA church plants and future plants reproducing churches when they are only one, or two, or three years old! This will result in multiplication.

Needless to say, I am excited about what God is doing at Anthem Church and grateful to be part of it, even if it is in a small way.

The story is told of a man flying in..."

“
HOT AIR BALLOON MANAGEMENT … 3 Tasks of a Manager/Leader

The story is told of a man flying in a hot air balloon who realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon and shouts, “Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?” The man below says, “Yes, you’re in a hot air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field.”

“You must work in Information Technology,” says the balloonist. “I do,” replies the man. “How did you know?” “Well” says the balloonist, “everything you have told me is technically correct, but it’s no use to anyone.”

The man below says, “You must work in Management”. “I do” replies the balloonist, “but how did you know?” “Well”, says the man, “you don’t know where you are, or where you’re going, but you expect me to be able to help you. You’re in the same position you were before we met, but now it’s my fault.”

Perhaps you know the balloonist well and think he is only full of hot air. Let me help. I’d like to share three simple helps for those in management and how exercising these concepts can cause morale to rise like a hot air balloon in your organization.

3 Task of a Manger/Leader:

1. The task of management is to empower others.

Nothing inspires creativity and productivity more than a manager who realizes the best thing he can do is to get out of the way and let his people work. Leadership expert John Maxwell says, “When a leader can’t or won’t empower others, he creates barriers within the organization that people cannot overcome. If the barriers remain long enough, then the people give up, or they move to another organization where they can maximize their potential.” You will unleash the potential of your organization when you unleash the potential of your people. Give your people the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

2. The second task of management is that of trust.

If management has enough confidence in its associates to hire them, they need to trust them to do the job. In essence, trust is the foundation of leadership. I must emphasize that trust is a two way street. Associates must trust the instincts of management. Management must trust the team he has assembled. Craig Weathersup explains, “You don’t build trust by talking about it. You build it by achieving results, always with integrity and in a manner that shows real personal regard for the people with whom you work.” Trust is the foundation upon which all success is built, it’s the foundation upon which you succeed or fail. Build it and protect it all cost.

3. The final task of management is to unleash the potential of its people.

Unleashing the potential of the people in the organization is the by-product of empowerment and trust. When creativity within the organization is allowed to flourish, when trust is mutual, then it’s only a matter of time before success is shared. Leadership guru Warren Bennis was right when he maintained, “The leader finds greatness in the group, and he or she helps members find it in themselves.”

Just like a hot air balloon, to rise to new heights, you have to unleash the tethers that would hold you down. A successful team will do that when they are empowered, trusted, and unleashed to succeed.
”

-

Something I wanted to share with you that landed in my inbox..."

“
Leadership lessons from John Wooden

Something I wanted to share with you that landed in my inbox earlier and in its simplicity captures more about leadership than many books written on the subject. Leadership is not something you are born with, it is something you do to people, either well or abysmally. We all have sour memories of how it felt when someone did it badly and we may be privileged enough to know someone who really inspires us in this regard. After all, its much easier to point to who is a good or bad leader, than it is pinpointing what it is they do or don’t do that makes us say that.

However, John Wooden may be able to help us. He is generally regarded as the nation’s greatest basketball coach. His UCLA teams during the 1960s and 1970s won 10 NCAA men’s basketball national championships and set records for consecutive victories. But since retiring in 1975, the 97-year-old coach has gained fame as a philosopher and motivator.

[From LA Times]

Wooden sat down with The Times and offered up 10 tips — one for each of the NCAA basketball championships his players won at UCLA — for how business owners can become better leaders.

1. Listen.

One thing that is often overlooked in leadership is the ability to listen. Listening is so important to those under your supervision.

2. Care.

Another very important part of leadership is to make those under your supervision feel that you care for them — not just for the job they are doing for you, but you really care for them personally. You just can’t tell them you do that, you have to show it.

While some roles aren’t as big or in the forefront as others, they are still very important. I used to use this analogy: It is like having a powerful car. Now the engine, like an Alcindor [now called Kareem Abdul-Jabbar], who played for me, that’s powerful. Here’s another fellow who is just a wheel. And there is another fellow who is just a nut that holds the wheel on. You have to have them all. You must make every person feel that they are needed.

3. Recognize.

When I was teaching in high school in basketball, for example, [I taught that] my players must never score without thanking someone. Don’t run over and shake their hand but look at them and give them a little sign or something of appreciation. Everybody likes to have a pat on the back.

4. Prepare.

[Managers should be aware of] preparation for whatever their job is, little or big, preparation is so important. Failure to prepare is preparing to fail. You must not put things off.

5. Be industrious.

Nothing can be accomplished without work. You’ve got to work hard. If you are looking for the short cut, if you are looking for the easy way, if you are looking for the trick to get things done, you might get them done. But you are not adding strength, you are not building.

6. Have enthusiasm.

If you don’t enjoy what you are doing you are not going to be able to give it the industriousness that you should have. You must have that to inspire others to do their best.

7. Be patient.

Good things take time. And that’s the way it should be. We don’t want it that way but that’s the way it is. I think that is a very important thing that a leader must get across to those under his supervision.

8. Have confidence.

You must believe in yourself. If you don’t have confidence in yourself you can’t expect those under your supervision to act with much confidence.

9. Don’t fear failure.

Have initiative but don’t be afraid of failure. We are all going to fail at times because we are all imperfect. When I had assistants, I always wanted them never to be afraid to make a suggestion. We don’t know a thing we don’t learn from somebody else in one way or another. If you do agree [with their suggestion] and use it and it works, be sure that they are the one that gets the credit, not you. Now if it doesn’t work, you take the blame because you made that decision to use it.

10. Win respect.

You have to have the respect of those under your supervision. You can’t obtain that respect unless you are honest with them and they can depend upon you. Don’t try to sell them a bill of goods or you will lose all respect.

Some very good rules to live your life by. Enough said.
”

LAUNCHING LARGE … Mark Lee, Lead Pastor of Vantage Point...

LAUNCHING LARGE … Mark Lee, Lead Pastor of Vantage Point Church in Eastvale, CA shares about launching a large church with the EFCA West

Friday Meeting, May 21, 2010 @ 12:00 p.m. (noon)

We had a great first meeting for RYL last Friday and our second meeting is today.
